Rollins, bullpen help Phillies put away Giants

May 4, 2007 - 8:56 AM SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- Two big innings by the Philadelphia Phillies were just enough.

Jimmy Rollins hit two triples and drove in two runs as the Phillies built a big lead and then held on to beat the San Francisco Giants, 9-7, on a rainy Thursday night.

Shane Victorino had three hits and two RBI and Chase Utley also drove in two runs for Philadelphia, which has beaten San Francisco 11 of the last 13 times.

"We scored some runs, had a couple big innings, got the lead on them," Phillies Manager Charlie Manuel said. "We were holding on, fighting for dear life at the end."

The Phillies scored four runs in the second inning and five in the fourth to give starter Adam Eaton a 9-2 advantage.

Rollins hit a two-run triple in the second inning off San Francisco starter Matt Cain, which was followed by an RBI single by Victorino, who stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Chase Utley for a 4-1 lead.

"That two-run triple by Jimmy was big," Utley said. "It made it easier for us to get into our offense."

Rollins tripled and scored in the fourth on another single by Victorino before an RBI double by Utley knocked Cain out of the game. Pat Burrell belted a run-scoring double off Jonathan Sanchez and RBI singles by Abraham Nunez and Carlos Ruiz provided the Phillies a 9-2 edge.

Cain (1-2) yielded seven runs, eight hits and four walks in three-plus innings. It was the third time in his brief career the 22-year old righthander had surrendered seven runs in a contest.

"We put pressure on him," Phillies center fielder Aaron Rowand said. "Bottom line, he just didn't have his A game today."

"Cain's going to have an off-night and this was it tonight," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

San Francisco rallied for five runs in the sixth before the bullpen shut the door. All four batters Eaton faced in the frame reached, and a two-run double by Omar Vizquel knocked Eaton out of the game.

"We were grinding out hits and runs in the game and got right back in it," Bochy said. "But we just got too far down to rally tonight."

Eaton (3-2) surrendered six runs, eight hits and three walks in five-plus innings while striking out out five. Despite the victory, the righthander saw his ERA balloon to 8.18.

"Adam has trouble sometimes when he gets in jams," Manuel said. "He had trouble getting out of them tonight."

Against reliever Ryan Madson, Kevin Frandsen drove home a run with a groundout and Randy Winn doubled in a run before Eliezer Alfonso tripled home Winn before Madson escaped.

Madson got the first two outs of the eighth and Antonio Alfonseca got four outs before Brett Myers worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his first career save and the Phillies' fifth win in their last six games here.

San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds went 1-for-2 with a single before being removed in the fifth inning because of the wet conditions.
