Division leaders clash in Atlanta

May 4, 2007 - 12:58 PM LA Dodgers (17-11) at Atlanta (17-10) 7:35 pm EDT

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves have both gotten off to hot starts this season.

The division leaders will meet Friday when the Braves host the Dodgers in the opener of a three-game series.

Atlanta will send its ace John Smoltz to the mound in the opener. Smoltz (3-1, 3.96 ERA) earned a victory in his last start, allowing two runs and nine hits in seven innings at Colorado last Saturday.

Smoltz, who turns 40 years old on May 15, will likely be without his starting catcher, Brian McCann, who injured his finger behind the plate on Tuesday.

Los Angeles will counter with Brett Tomko (0-2, 3.75). The veteran righthander has never won at Turner Field before. He pitched out of the bullpen on Monday, yielding two runs and three hits in two-thirds of an inning.

The Dodgers are 9-4 on the road this season and have won mostly due to their solid starting pitching. Their team ERA of 3.26 ranks second in the National League.
