Cardinals to take the field with heavy hearts
May 4, 2007 - 1:07 PM Houston (12-15) at St Louis (10-16) 8:10 pm EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- The St. Louis Cardinals attended a memorial Thursday in Tupelo, Mississippi for the late Josh Hancock. With heavy hearts, they will start a weekend series against the Houston Astros on Friday.
The 29-year-old Hancock was killed in an automobile accident last Sunday morning when his SUV slammed into the back of a tow truck on the side of the highway. The team was among an estimated 500 people at Hancock's Mississippi memorial service.
On the field, St. Louis has dropped five straight games and is playing nothing like the spirited team that won the World Series just seven months ago.
Hitting has been at the root of the problems. The Cardinals have been outscored, 37-6 during their recent skid and have scored more than five runs just four times in their first 26 games.
Adam Wainwright (1-2, 6.14 ERA) will take the mound for St. Louis. The first-year starter has not notched a win since his season debut against the Astros on April 6. The 25-year-old righthander allowed just one run and five hits over seven innings in that start.
The Astros - no strangers to offensive deficiencies themselves - will counter with Chris Sampson (3-1, 3.55). The second-year righthander yielded one run and five hits over 6 1/3 innings last Saturday in a win over Milwaukee.
The seven runs Houston managed against Cincinnati on Thursday marked just the second time in its last 12 games it has scored more than four runs. The Astros are 3-9 over that span.
