Red Sox, Twins meet for the first time in 2007
May 4, 2007 - 3:23 PM Boston (18-9) at Minnesota (15-13) 8:10 pm EDTMINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Two teams will playoff aspirations will meet for the first time this season when the Boston Red Sox visit the Minnesota Twins on Friday in the opener of a three-game series.
The Red Sox will send knuckleballer Tim Wakefield (2-3, 2.59 ERA) to the hill. The 40-year-old veteran began the season hot, allowing just one earned run in each of his first three starts.
However, Wakefield has earned losses in his past two starts, including last Saturday when he yielded three runs in a season-low 5 1/3 innings against the New York Yankees.
Wakefield has done well against the Twins, owning a career 11-4 mark against the Twins, and the element-free indoor Metrodome can only help his knuckler.
The Twins will counter will Carlos Silva (2-1, 3.10). The portly righthander has allowed three earned runs in each of his last three starts, earning a win last Saturday at Detroit.
A noted control artist, Silva has issued just seven walks in 29 innings thus far in 2007, a trait that should serve him well considering the power in Boston's lineup.
The bad news for Minnesota is that Manny Ramirez, who has been mired in a season-long slump, broke out with a pair of homers in the Red Sox's 8-7 win over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday.
- bones nice win by the sox and glad to see papelbon close it out, even without command of his fastball.
