Pitching mismatch favors Twins against Red Sox
May 5, 2007 - 2:14 PM Boston (19-9) at Minnesota (15-14) 7:10 pm EDTMINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Minnesota Twins have the best pitcher in baseball going Saturday against the visiting Boston Red Sox.
Johan Santana takes the hill for the Twins, looking to buck an upsetting trend. The reigning American League Cy Young Award winner has dropped his Last two starts at the Metrodome. He has never lost three in a row at home.
Santana (3-2, 3.60 ERA) took a streak of 24 consecutive home starts without a loss (17-0) into an April 13 matchup against the Devil Rays before taking a loss. He is 42-14 with a 2.98 ERA in his career at home, but has losT his last two, allowing four earned runs in each.
Santana has been somewhat vulnerable against the Red Sox, owning a 3-4 career mark with a 3.55 ERA in 11 games - eight starts.
Boston will counter with its No. 5 starter Julian Tavarez (1-2, 7.58). The veteran sinkerballer picked up his first win of the season last Sunday against the New York Yankees, yielding three runs in five innings.
A strong performance would go a long way towards keeping the 33-year-old Tavarez in the rotation. Jon Lester is eligible to come off the disabled list, but a good outing by Tavarez could keep the promising youngster in the minors for a few more starts.
The Red Sox won Friday night's game, 2-0, behind seven strong innings from Tim Wakefield and one monster blast by David Ortiz.
