Giants look for second straight win vs. Phillies
May 5, 2007 - 2:44 PM Philadelphia (13-16) at San Francisco (15-13) 3:55 pm EDTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) - Eliezer Alfonzo has made the most of his limited playing in recent games.
Alfonzo and Giants will look for their second straight win over the Philadelphia Phillies when the teams face off in the third game of a four-game series on Saturday afternoon.
Entering the series against the Phillies, the backup catcher was just 1-for-14 at the plate this season, but has come up big when it has mattered most.
Alfonzo entered Thursday's series opener as a defensive replacement and proceeded to go 3-for-3. One night later, he smacked a go-ahead, bases-clearing double as the Giants finally got on the board in the seventh inning en route to a 6-2 victory.
Alfonzo, who was pinch hitting for pitcher Matt Morris, then slammed a deep drive that just got over the head of Phillies center fielder Aaron Rowand - clearing the bases and giving San Francisco its first lead of the game.
The Giants will look to keep it going behind Noah Lowry (3-2, 3.69), who will be looking to reel off four straight wins for the first time since notching six in a row from August 6-September 3, 2005.
Philadelphia will counter with Jon Lieber (1-0, 2.57), who opened the season in the bullpen but is adjusting nicely in his return to the rotation. The righthander is 1-0 with a 1.45 ERA in three starts this season.
Lieber posted a 1-1 mark with a 5.84 ERA in two starts against San Francisco last season, including 0-2 with a 6.57 ERA on the road.
The Phillies have alternated wins and losses in their last nine games.
