Sosa impressive in spot start as Mets beat Diamondbacks

May 6, 2007 - 6:54 AM PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Jorge Sosa took advantage of his chance to pitch in the majors again and helped the New York Mets continue their impressive streak in Arizona.

Sosa (1-0) carried a shutout in the seventh inning and the New York Mets touched up reigning Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb for four runs in the sixth inning for a 6-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Shawn Green had three hits, including a second-inning homer, for the Mets, who won their 13th straight game against Arizona and third straight in this four-game set. Green has been part of the streak from both sides. He was traded from Arizona to New York last August.

"The streak is a crazy thing being on both sides of it now," Green said. "I played behind Brandon a lot of times and know what a great pitcher his is."

Called up from Class AAA New Orleans to replace the injured Orlando Hernandez, Sosa was charged with two runs and four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. He was 4-0 with a 1.13 ERA for New Orleans.

"I went down to Triple A, and I was working on my slider and tried to throw it for a strike when I was behind the count. I had success doing that tonight," Sosa said though an interpreter.

Sosa only allowed three baserunners to reach scoring position before running into trouble in the seventh after allowing a one-out double to Scott Hairston and a walk to Chris Young.

"Anytime you can step in and give us a quality start is impressive but it is just one time around," Mets manager Willie Randolph said. "It is big to come in and do what he has done. He has been around a while so I am not surprised or taken back by anything. He came in and did his job and that is huge for us."

Rookie Joe Smith entered and yielded a one-out two-run double to rookie Miguel Montero to cut the Mets lead 6-2.

Green hit a two-run homer to open the scoring.

"(Webb) has the best sinker in the game and when you face him all you think about is to try to get something up," Green said. "That is the only approach you can have. I was fortunate that it was up and stayed in a good location that I could drive it and it made it out."

The Mets, who have outscored the Diamondbacks, 104-29, during the streak, broke open a 2-0 game in the sixth. Paul Lo Duca hit a run-scoring single and another run scored on a throwing error by left fielder Scott Hairston. Green added an RBI base hit and Endy Chavez a sacrifice fly for a 6-0 bulge.

For Webb, it was another frustrating loss to the Mets. The righthanded sinkerballer has lost his last five starts against New York and was doomed by the four-run sixth. Webb allowed six runs - five earned - and six hits in six innings.

"I threw decent but started to get tired towards the end," Webb said. "Most of the runs came on pretty good pitches. It was a big loss, we have lost four in a row and I am trying to be the stopper but wasn't able to do it tonight."

Orlando Hudson went 1-for-3 and has reached base safely in every game this season.
