Astros look to take series vs. Cardinals

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- After a rare display of offensive power, the Houston Astros hope for more of the same.

The Astros look for their second straight series win when they finish a three-game set against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.

Houston, which had scored three runs or fewer in eight of its previous 10 games, erupted for a season high 13 in a shutout of St. Louis on Saturday.

Chris Sampson (3-1, 3.55 ERA) makes his fifth start for Houston, two days after he was supposed to pitch. The righthander, who has never faced St. Louis, was scratched from his scheduled start on Friday after spending Thursday in the hospital with a severe sinus infection.

In a 10-1 victory on April 28, Sampson limited Milwaukee to one run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings while striking out a career-high eight.

First-year starter Braden Looper (3-2, 2.84) takes the mound for the Cardinals. The converted reliever allowed six runs and 11 hits in five-plus innings Tuesday in a 12-2 loss at Milwaukee.

The righthander, who is making his first career start against the Astros, is 4-2 with four saves and a 2.14 ERA in 30 relief appearances vs. Houston.

St. Louis has lost six of seven and has been outscored 51-10 in those games.
