DeSalvo set to become 10th different starter for Yankees

BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- While the New York Yankees wait for Roger Clemens, they will have to settle for Matt DeSalvo.

DeSalvo will become the sixth rookie pitcher to start for the New York Yankees in Monday's four-game series finale with the Seattle Mariners.

The righthanded DeSalvo (NR) posted an impressive 3-0 record with a 1.05 ERA and struck out 23 in 25 1/3 innings in five starts with Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. DeSalvo will be the 10th starting pitcher New York has used this year, setting a major-league record through 30 games.

Apparently, owner George Steinbrenner had seen enough from his young pitchers that filled in for his injury-ravaged staff since he authorized the team to bring back Clemens once again.

Clemens announced to the crowd on Sunday that he will be back. For now though, the Yankees faithful will get another glimpse of the future.

Meanwhile, the Mariners will turn to veteran righthander Miguel Batista (3-2, 6.30 ERA), who his looking for his third straight win. In his last outing, Batista allowed two runs and five hits in 7 1/3 innings as Seattle beat Chicago, 3-2, on Wednesday.

Batista will try and help the Mariners earn a series split.
