Perez takes mound as Mets open three-game series vs. Giants
May 7, 2007 - 3:25 PM Ny Mets (19-11) at San Francisco (16-14) 10:15 pm EDTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- Oliver Perez has made a lot of hitters miss over the last two weeks.
Perez hopes to continue rolling Monday when he takes the mound as the New York Mets visit the San Francisco Giants in the opener of a three-game series.
Perez (3-2, 3.41 ERA) is coming off a stellar outing in which he struck a season-high 10 in a 6-3 win over Florida on Wednesday. Since yielding a season-high seven walks in a loss to Philadelphia on April 11, the lefthander has struck out 28 and walked just three over his last three outings.
Perez, who is 0-3 with a 6.60 ERA in six starts vs. San Francisco, will try to help the Mets get back on track after having their four-game winning streak snapped on Sunday against Arizona.
He will be opposed by fellow lefthander Barry Zito (2-3, 3.52), who has come on strong since struggling in his first two starts with the Giants.
A former Cy Young Award winner, Zito boasts an impressive 1.65 ERA over his last four outings, going 2-1 in that span. The southpaw worked seven solid innings but did not factor in the decision in Wednesday's 5-3 win against Colorado.
Barry Bonds will be in the lineup aiming for his 745th homer after sitting out Sunday night's 8-5 loss to Philadelphia. Bonds is 1-for-7 with three walks and three strikeouts against Perez.
