Slumping Cardinals face Rockies
May 8, 2007 - 2:46 PM Colorado (14-18) at St Louis (12-18) 8:10 pm EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- The St. Louis Cardinals will look to snap out of the offensive doldrums when they face the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday.
The Cardinals rank last in the majors with 92 runs and have scored three or fewer runs in their last nine games - going 2-7 in those contests. St. Louis is in last place in the National League Central and 5-11 at Busch Stadium this season - the second-worst home record in baseball.
Their bats continued to struggle on Monday but the Cardinals were able to squeak out a 3-1 win in the series opener over the Houston Astros.
Scott Rolen snapped a lengthy slump with a two-run single and converted reliever Braden Looper continued his strong start to the season, giving up one run and six hits in six innings.
St. Louis aims for its second win in a row behind Brad Thompson (1-0, 4.67 ERA), who will make his first start of the season in place of injured ace Chris Carpenter.
The righthander has not pitched since Opening Day with right elbow problems and was supposed to return soon. But the team announced Saturday that he must undergo arthroscopic surgery and will miss at least three months.
The Rockies will counter with Taylor Buchholz (1-1, 8.04), who allowed six runs and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings but did not factor in the decision in a 9-7 win over San Francisco last Tuesday.
Buchholz has struggled in only two starts since joining the rotation to replace the injured Rodrigo Lopez.
Colorado has won five of its last eight games.
