RHP Vargas, Brewers look for sweep of lowly Nationals
May 9, 2007 - 2:39 PM Washington (9-24) at Milwaukee (23-10) 1:05 pm EDTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) - Claudio Vargas is the right man to have on the mound as the Milwaukee Brewers aim for the sweep of the lowly Washington Nationals on Wednesday.
A former National, Vargas looks to continue his undefeated start for Milwaukee (23-10), which owns the best record in the major leagues after winning its last five games.
Prince Fielder hit a three-run homer and J.J. Hardy extended his career-best 19-game hitting streak with a home run and a double as the Brewers beat the Nationals, 6-4, for their eighth win of their 10-game homestand.
So far, Milwaukee has won all five games started by Vargas (3-0, 2.89 ERA) this season. In addition to that, the righthander has not allowed a run in his last 12 innings.
Vargas yielded four hits and walked three in six innings of a 10-0 win over Pittsburgh on Friday.
In the midst of a season-high eight-game losing streak, Washington (9-24) has the worst record in baseball.
Righthander Jason Bergmann (0-3, 3.34) will take the mound in hopes of putting an end to the skid. He has dropped his last two outings, giving up six runs - five earned - over 13 innings.
