Mets' RHP Maine looks to stay unbeaten vs. Bonds' Giants
May 9, 2007 - 2:57 PM NY Mets (20-12) at San Francisco (17-15) 3:35 pm EDTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- John Maine will face the toughest test of his young career on Wednesday.
The red-hot Maine takes the mound for the New York Mets against historic slugger Barry Bonds and the San Francisco Giants in the rubber game of a three-game series.
The major league's ERA leader will be looking to improve upon his unbeaten start, and it has been a welcome sight for the Mets' injury plagued staff. Orlando Hernandez is on the 15-day disabled list and Pedro Martinez is out until after the All-Star break.
Maine (5-0, 1.37), who has yet to allow more than two runs in any start, has stepped up as New York's second-most reliable starter behind Tom Glavine. Glavine earned his 294th career win by beating the Giants, 4-1, on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old Maine will have his hands full with Bonds. The seven-time MVP hit his 745th homer on Tuesday, and has hit seven in his last 15 games. The lefthanded slugger needs just 10 to tie Hank Aaron's all-time home run record.
Matt Morris (4-1, 3.20) will take the hill for the Giants, and is 6-3 with a 3.33 ERA in his career against the Mets.
Morris is in the midst of a revival and is looking for his fifth win after going 10-15 with a 4.98 ERA in 2006. He allowed two first-inning runs against Philadelphia on Friday before settling down to lead his team to a 6-2 win.
