Oldest lefthanded pitching matchup in history highlights series finale

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- When Randy Johnson and Jamie Moyer face off Wednesday night, it will be the oldest matchup of lefthanders in major league history.

Johnson starts for the Arizona Diamondbacks, who are looking for a sweep of a three-game series when they host the Philadelphia Phillies.

The 43-year-old Johnson helped set the previous record April 24 when he faced off with San Diego's David Wells. Unfortunately for Wells, the 44-year-old Moyer is six months older.

Johnson (0-2, 6.50 ERA) is off to a slow start, having lost two of his first three outings after beginning the season on the disabled list following offseason back surgery. The lefthander gave up five runs and nine hits in seven innings in a 5-3 loss to the New York Mets on Friday.

Surprisingly, Moyer (3-2, 2.85) has had little trouble fooling hitters this season. The southpaw has yet to allow more than three earned runs in any start this season.

Moyer did take a loss in his latest outing, yielding three runs and five hits in seven innings of a 6-2 setback at San Francisco on Friday.

The Diamondbacks picked up a win in the second game of the series on Tuesday with a 3-2 win behind seven solid innings by rookie Micah Owings, who is two decades Johnson and Moyer's junior.
