Pirates and Cubs play again after 15-inning marathon
May 9, 2007 - 3:40 PM Pittsburgh (14-17) at Chicago Cubs (15-15) 8:05 pm EDTCHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs Tuesday night in a 15-inning showdown. If either team has anything left, it will be on display Wednesday.
Pittsburgh picked up the marathon win Tuesday when Ronny Paulino scored on Jack Wilson's sacrifice fly in the top of the 15th. Closer Salomon Torres pitched a perfect bottom of the inning for his 10th save.
The teams' combined to use 14 pitchers. With the bullpens spent, it will be up to the Pirates' Tom Gorzelanny and Cubs' Jason Marquis to pitch deep into the game.
Gorzelanny (4-1, 2.97 ERA) will take the mound having won his last start. The promising young lefthander allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings last Thursday in a 4-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
The 24-year-old has had just one start this season where he yielded more than three runs.
Marquis (4-1, 2.09) will look to continue a surprising resurgence with the Cubs.
Marquis lost 16 games last season with the St. Louis Cardinals, struggling to a 6.02 ERA. However, Chicago saw enough in the righthander to sign him to a three-year, $21 million contract in the offseason.
So far, the money has been well spent as Marquis has won his last four starts, including eight innings of one-run ball against the Pirates last Wednesday.
