Tigers face Mariners, aim for ninth straight win
May 9, 2007 - 3:43 PM Seattle (14-14) at Detroit (20-11) 7:05 pm EDTDETROIT (Ticker) -- The Detroit Tigers fell just short of a World Series championship last season. This campaign, they will look for their longest winning streak since they hoisted the trophy last.
The Tigers will look to extend their major league-best eight-game winning streak when they continue a three-game series with the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday.
Omar Infante had three hits and a career-high four RBI to lead the reigning American League champions to a 9-7 victory over the Mariners in the series opener on Tuesday, tying them with the San Francisco Giants for the longest winning streak this season.
However, the last time Detroit reeled off nine straight wins was from May 14-24, 1984 - the second of two nine-game runs en route to a 35-5 start and a their last championship.
The Tigers will look to stay on a roll behind Nate Robertson (3-1, 2.48 ERA), who picked up his first win since April 10 last Wednesday. The lefthander allowed two runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings in a 3-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
Robertson is 4-2 with a 2.34 ERA in six career starts vs. the Mariners, including 2-0 with a 3.16 ERA this season.
He will be opposed by Cha Seung Baek (0-0, 7.53), who struggled in his last start, allowing seven runs and eight hits in just 3 2/3 frames in a wild 15-11 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday. He did not figure in the decision.
With Tuesday's loss, Seattle dropped to 2-4 on its current eight-game road trip. The Mariners will return home to begin a nine-game homestand vs. the Yankees on Friday.
