Japanese hurlers square off when Red Sox visit Blue Jays

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Daisuke Matsuzaka hopes to get back on track Wednesday when the Boston Red Sox visit the Toronto Blue Jays and their own Japanese hurler, Tomo Ohka.

The Blue Jays have dropped seven straight games to fall 8 1/2 games behind the Red Sox in the American League East.

Matsuzaka has had three straight less-than-stellar outings, culminating with a five-inning appearance where he gave up seven runs last Thursday against Seattle. The five innings pitched were a season low, as was the lone strikeout the 26-year-old managed against the Mariners.

The much-hyped righthander has been having trouble controlling his arsenal of pitches. Matsuzaka walked the bases loaded and hit a batter in the first inning against Seattle, yielding five earned runs in the frame.

Matsuzaka took a loss April 17 at Toronto despite surrendering just two runs in six innings while striking out 10.

Ohka is also trying to bounce back from a tough outing. The 31-year-old righthander suffered a loss at Texas last Friday, allowing seven runs - six earned - in 7 1/3 innings.

Ohka has pitched twice against the Red Sox this season, picking up a win April 23 at Boston and taking a loss here April 18.

The Red Sox took the first game of the series, 9-2, on Tuesday night, pounding out four homers off Blue Jays' starter Victor Zambrano.
