Silva, Contreras face off in rubber game

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins will meet Thursday in the rubber game of a three-game series at the Metrodome.

The Twins will send Carlos Silva (2-2, 2.75 ERA) to the mound in the hopes that his career resurgence this season is no fluke. Or at least that it lasts a little longer.

The burly righthander struggled to an 11-15 mark with a 5.94 ERA in 2006, but has been a pleasant surprise for Minnesota this season. Silva has yet to yield more than three earned runs in any start.

He was a hard-luck loser last Friday against Boston, allowing just one run and five hits in seven innings. Silva took a loss April 7 at Chicago, surrendering one run in five innings as the Twins were shut out by Javier Vasquez and four relievers.

The White Sox will counter with staff ace Jose Contreras (2-3, 4.88). The Cuban righthander has been up-and-down this season, combining four good starts with a pair of tough outings.

Contreras took a loss in his last start, allowing four runs - one earned - and six hits in six innings last Friday at Los Angeles. He has been strong against Minnesota in the past, owing a 3-2 career mark in eight games - seven starts - with a 3.72 ERA.

The Twins captured the first game of the series, 7-4 in 10 innings, but the White Sox recovered to take Wednesday's contest, 6-3, as lefthander John Danks earned his first major league win.
