Angels and Indians meet in rubber game of series
May 10, 2007 - 2:32 PM Cleveland (20-11) at LA Angels (18-16) 3:35 pm EDTANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- After snapping a three-game losing streak, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim aim to start a new streak Thursday when they take on the Cleveland Indians in the finale of a three-game series.
Gary Matthews Jr. blasted a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning and Jered Weaver tossed six solid frames as the Angels ended their skid with a 3-2 victory over the Indians on Wednesday.
Kendry Morales belted a game-tying two-run homer in the seventh inning for Anaheim, which had lost five of six contests entering Wednesday, failing to score more than three runs in all but one of those contests.
Its offense continued to sputter Wednesday but stellar pitching and a few key hits saved the day. The Angels will look to continue their success behind Kelvim Escobar (3-1, 2.84 ERA), who beat the Chicago White Sox twice last week.
Despite receiving a total of seven runs of support in those two triumphs, Escobar aims for his third straight win for the first time since September 13-24, 2003 with Toronto.
Wednesday's loss was just the fourth in 17 games for Cleveland, which holds a one-half game lead over the defending American League champion Detroit Tigers (20-12) in the AL Central.
The Indians will look to get back on track behind Jeremy Sowers (0-2, 5.87), who is looking to recover from the shortest outing of his career his last time out. He allowed six runs and five hits in just two innings in an 8-2 loss against the Baltimore Orioles last Sunday.
