Sleeping offenses hope to wake up when Orioles face Devil Rays
May 10, 2007 - 2:39 PM Tampa Bay (14-19) at Baltimore (16-18) 7:05 pm EDTBALTIMORE (Ticker) -- The Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Devil Rays combined for just one run Wednesday night. Hopefully the bats will wake up Thursday when the Orioles go for a sweep of the Devil Rays.
Baltimore's Erik Bedard and Tampa Bay's James Shields battled through a scoreless draw for seven innings until Orioles designated hitter Aubrey Huff hit the game-winning homer in the 10th inning against Brian Stokes.
The Devil Rays did manage seven hits, but stranded 11 runners en route to losing for the third straight time. They have struggled offensively lately, managing three runs or less in their last five games.
Casey Fossum (2-2, 7.34 ERA) takes the mound for Tampa Bay. The lefthander is hoping to build off his last start, which was his best of the season.
The 29-year-old lefthander yielded just one run and five hits in six innings, but did not factor in the decision as the Devil Rays dropped a 5-2 decision to the Oakland Athletics last Friday. Fossum had surrendered 15 earned runs in 10 2/3 frames over his two previous starts.
The Orioles counter with Daniel Cabrera (2-3, 4.00). The righthander, who turns 26 on May 28, is coming off his finest outing of the season as well.
Cabrera allowed just one run and three hits in seven innings to pick up a win here Saturday in an 8-2 win against the Cleveland Indians.
Baltimore has been looking for consistency out of the young Dominican, who has been plagued by wildness at times. He has delivered so far in 2007, yielding three earned runs or less in five of his seven starts and lasting into the seventh five times.
Nick Markakis, who shares the lead in RBI for the Orioles with 20 with Melvin Mora, is hitting just .200 (6-for-30) in his last eight games.
