Streaking Orioles visit surging Red Sox
May 11, 2007 - 1:37 PM Baltimore (17-18) at Boston (23-10) 7:05 pm EDTBOSTON (Ticker) -- The Baltimore Orioles are hoping to build off an impressive homestand when they take on the Boston Red Sox Friday at Fenway Park.
The Orioles moved into second place in the American League East with a three-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, including an 11-6 victory on Thursday. Former Red Sox Kevin Millar homered and had four RBI and Aubrey Huff added two hits.
Baltimore went 5-2 on its homestand.
The Orioles aim to keep it going behind Brian Burres (0-1, 3.71 ERA), who made the first start of his career last Sunday. He allowed five runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings - striking out three and walking two - in a 9-6 loss to Cleveland.
But it will not be easy for the Orioles to keep up their winnings ways against Boston, which outscored Baltimore, 11-3, in two wins at Camden Yards earlier this season. The Red Sox also have dominated the series, winning 22 of the last 25 contests between the teams.
On Thursday, Tim Wakefield and two relievers combined on a five-hitter and Mike Lowell hit a three-run homer as the Red Sox shut out the Toronto Blue Jays, 8-0, to sweep a three-game series.
Boston, which has won seven of its last eight games, will look to continue its hot play behind Julian Tavarez (1-3, 6.48), who yielded just two runs and four hits in six frames in a 2-1 loss at Minnesota on Saturday.
Tavarez is 2-2 with a 4.05 ERA in 13 career appearances, including two starts, against the Orioles.
