Blue Jays aim to snap a nine-game losing streak
May 11, 2007 - 1:40 PM Tampa Bay (14-20) at Toronto (13-21) 7:07 pm EDTTORONTO (Ticker) -- It just keeps getting worse for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Now without their All-Star closer for the rest of the season, the Blue Jays aim to snap a nine-game losing streak when they host the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the opener of a three-game series on Friday.
Toronto finished April with a 13-12 record, including a 6-1 win over the Texas Rangers on April 30. However, since then, the Blue Jays have not recorded a victory and absorbed a serious injury to an integral player.
Closer B.J. Ryan will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing "Tommy John" surgery on Thursday to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. The loss of Ryan is a major setback for Toronto, which now has lost nine in a row to slip to 13-21.
The Blue Jays have not dropped 10 straight contests since June 18-28, 1994.
They aim to snap their skid behind A.J. Burnett (2-3, 5.09 ERA), who is 5-1 with a 2.56 ERA in nine starts vs. the Devil Rays in his career. But this season, the hard-throwing righthander is looking to avoid his third straight loss.
Burnett has not dropped three straight starts since losing a career-high five in a row from August 24-September 14, 2005.
He allowed three runs and seven hits in 7 2/3 frames, while striking out a season-high nine and walking one in a 3-2 loss at Texas last Sunday.
