Suppan, surprising Brewers face Mets
May 11, 2007 - 2:53 PM Milwaukee (24-10) at NY Mets (21-12) 7:10 pm EDTFLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- The surprising Milwaukee Brewers own the best record in the major leagues. They now will face a stiff test against one of the National League's top contenders.
Milwaukee's Jeff Suppan will not be intimidated by the New York Mets, who led the National League with 97 wins last season but lost to St. Louis in the NL Championship Series.
Suppan (5-2, 2.63 ERA) was the MVP of that series. He won Game Three and allowed just one run in seven innings in Game Seven.
In the offseason, Suppan signed a four-year, $42 million contract with the Brewers.
Suppan has won his last five starts after opening with two losses.
A perennial doormat in the NL Central, the Brewers have gotten off to a hot start thanks to their slew of talented young stars. However, Milwaukee will play 13 of its next 16 contests on the road - including series against the Philadelphia Phillies and the Minnesota Twins.
Suppan will be opposed by Jorge Sosa (1-0, 2.84), who allowed two runs and four hits in 6 1/3 innings in a 6-2 win at Arizona last Saturday - his lone start of the season. The righthander was starting in place of injured starter Orlando Hernandez.
The Mets have won six of their last eight games.
