Garland tosses a gem as White Sox beat Royals
May 12, 2007 - 4:08 AM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago White Sox and their anemic offense got some help from Jon Garland.Garland pitched 8 1/3 strong innings and A.J Pierzynski delivered the big blast en route to a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday.
The White Sox entered the contest with a major-league worst .223 batting average, but got just enough hits to overcome a strong start from Royals lefthander Odalis Perez (2-4).
"Both guys pitched really well," Chicago catcher A.J. Pierzynski said. "It was a tough game, a tough game to get some hits, and a great pitching performance by Garland."
Garland (2-2) scattered four hits and two walks while striking out three. The 29-year-old righthander took a shutout into the ninth inning before allowing an RBI double to Mark Grudzielanek with one out in the final frame.
"To me he should have a better record than what he has, but I think today was outstanding," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "He only threw 100 pitches in nine innings, he was throwing strikes and changing speeds and when you do that, that's going to be your result."
Matt Thornton and Bobby Jenks got the last two outs, with Jenks earning his 12th save.
Pierzynski's homer with two outs in the fourth opened the scoring for the White Sox, who have won three straight. They added another run in the fifth when Tadahito Iguchi doubled to lead off the inning and came home on shortstop Tony Pena's throwing error.
Perez had his finest outing of the season in the losing effort. The veteran lefthander yielded just the two runs and five hits over seven-plus innings.
"He was really good, I probably shouldn't have started him in the eighth," Kansas City manager Buddy Bell said, "But I thought he deserved to go back out there."
Perez has struggled this season, entering Friday's contest with a 6.75. He had not made it past the sixth inning in any of his previous seven starts.
The loss drops the Royals to 11-25, the worst mark in the American League.
