Red Sox RHP Beckett goes for franchise history
May 13, 2007 - 1:03 PM Baltimore (18-19) at Boston (24-11) 2:05 pm EDTBOSTON (Ticker) -- Josh Beckett has a chance to win for the eighth time in as many starts this season when the Boston Red Sox host the Baltimore Orioles.
The righthander, who turns 27 on Tuesday, has already cruised past Pedro Martinez and Roger Clemens in the club record book and now has his sights on Babe Ruth (1917). The Hall of Fame slugger shares the franchise pitching record of eight wins to start a season with Dave Ferris (1945) and Roger Moret (1973).
Beckett (7-0, 2.51 ERA) already owns a win against the Orioles this season, claiming a victory at Camden Yards on April 26. He held Baltimore to two runs and eight hits in eight innings.
The Orioles will counter with converted reliver Jeremy Guthrie (2-1, 4.64). Forced into duty due to injuries to Jaret Wright and Adam Loewen suffering injuries, Guthrie turned in a solid effort last Tuesday to earn a win.
The 28-year-old held the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to one run and six hits in six innings. Guthrie struck out two and did not issue a walk.
Boston pounded the Baltimore bullpen for nine runs in a 13-4 win.
- bones Mmmm, NESN just finished showing this game during the rain delay. The reaction of the announcer, Sox players, and Fenway crowd on the last play is just excellent.
