Nationals go for first sweep of season
May 13, 2007 - 1:49 PM Florida (16-20) at Washington (11-25) 1:35 pm EDTWASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Jason Simontacchi takes the mound for the Washington Nationals as they look for their first series sweep of the season against the Florida Marlins on Sunday.
Simontacchi (0-1, 6.00 ERA) is making his second start after being out of the league since 2004 due to shoulder surgery. He missed the entire 2005 season and was a reliever in the Independent League during the 2006 campaign.
The Nationals purchased Simontacchi's contract from Class AAA Columbus of the International League on May 7, and he allowed four runs and six hits in six innings in his first start against Milwaukee last Wednesday.
Wes Obermueller (1-1, 3.66) takes the mound for the Marlins, who hope to avoid the embarrassment of being swept by the team with the worst record in the National League. Obermueller did not get a decision as he allowed four runs - three earned - in five innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers last Wednesday.
Ryan Zimmerman ended a game that was delayed twice by rain with a two-out grand slam in the ninth off reliever Jorge Julio as Washington won 7-3 on Saturday. Florida, which has dropped six of eight, stranded 12 runners.
