Red Sox host Tigers in opener of four-game series

May 14, 2007 - 1:19 PM Detroit (23-13) at Boston (25-11) 7:05 pm EDT

BOSTON (Ticker) - Fresh off a thrilling victory, the Boston Red Sox host the Detroit Tigers in the opener of a four-game series on Monday.

On the verge of losing the rubber game of a three-game series against Baltimore on Sunday, Boston rallied for six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 6-5 victory.

Boston, which has the best record in baseball, holds an eight-game lead in the American League East. It matches their largest divisional lead since being eight games in front of the New York Yankees on September 30, 1995 - the season of their last division title.

While the Red Sox enter on a high, the Tigers are coming off their most lopsided loss of the season, a 16-4 setback at Minnesota on Sunday. But despite the loss, the Tigers still are an AL-best 9-2 in May.

Hoping to sustain the momentum created by their incredible comeback on Sunday and early season success, the Red Sox Daisuke Matsuzaka (4-2, 4.80 ERA) to the mound. The Japanese righthander, who has a personal three-game winning streak, is coming off his best outing in four starts, holding the Toronto to one run and five hits with eight strikeouts over seven innings in a 9-3 win.

Matsuzaka will need to cool the bat of Gary Sheffield, who is batting .361 (13-for-36) with four home runs and nine RBI in his last nine games. The Tigers' slugger is looking forward to his return to Fenway Park, where he is a career .325 hitter with six home runs and 26 RBI in 41 contests.

Nate Robertson (3-2, 3.43) gets the start for Detroit. The lefthander is looking to bounce back from his worst outing of the year as he surrendered six runs and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings in 9-2 loss to Seattle on Wednesday.

Robertson is 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA in five career starts against the Red Sox.
