Red-hot Cust leads Athletics against Royals

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) - Red-hot Jack Cust leads the Oakland Athletics into the opener of a four-game series against the Kansas City Royals on Monday.

A journeyman outfielder who had toiled in the minor leagues, Cust was acquired from San Diego on May 3 for a player to be named.

Cust has been spectacular since joining Oakland, batting .346 with six homers and 14 RBI in just 26 at-bats over seven games. He has homered five times during a four-game homer streak.

Trying to cool down Cust will be Gil Meche (3-1, 2.15 ERA), who was on the mound in the only game that Cust has not posted a hit since becoming an Athletic. Meche allowed two runs and three hits with a season-high seven strikeouts over his six innings in a 3-2 win over Oakland on Wednesday.

Dan Haren (3-2, 1.89 ERA) once again face Meche as he did on Wednesday. He yielded two runs, six hits and struck out seven in six innings but did not factor in the decision.

Oakland took two of three games at Kansas City last week.
