Cardinals aim to continue domination of Dodgers
May 15, 2007 - 2:55 PM St Louis (16-20) at LA Dodgers (23-16) 10:10 pm EDTLOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- With their offense starting to show signs of life, the St. Louis Cardinals look to continue their dominance of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Cardinals seek to extend a 10-game winning streak against the Dodgers on Tuesday.
St. Louis has outscored the Dodgers, 59-21 in its streak over Los Angeles.
The Cardinals are last in the majors in runs scored (118) and last in the NL in hits (247), but had eight runs and 10 hits in the first three innings of Monday's series-opening 8-4 victory. They also finished with 13 hits - the same number they had in their entire three-game weekend series against San Diego - when they were shut out twice.
The win streak over Los Angeles is the Cardinals' longest such streak in the 116-year-old history of the series.
Chris Duncan's two-run shot in the second inning in the series opener was the first homer the Cardinals had hit in 93 innings, when Duncan went deep in the third frame of a 12-2 loss to Milwaukee on May 1.
Adam Wainwright (3-2, 5.01 ERA) will try to win his third straight start. The righthander has given up four total runs in 12 innings to win his last two outings.
Wainwright, a converted reliever, allowed two runs and nine hits and no walks in six innings of a 9-2 win over Colorado last Wednesday. In three career relief appearances against the Dodgers, Wainwright has thrown 3 2/3 scoreless innings.
The Dodgers will counter with Derek Lowe (3-4, 3.61 ERA), who looks to bounce back from a hard-luck loss. The righthander took a four-hit shutout into the ninth inning last Thursday at Florida, but was hurt by a walk and an error before he yielded a three-run homer to Josh Willingham.
Lowe is 1-1 with a 2.40 ERA at Dodger Stadium in just three home starts this season. He has lost all three of his starts over his career and posted a 6.19 ERA against the Cardinals but he did pitch seven shutout innings to defeat St. Louis on October 27, 2004, to clinch a World Series sweep as a member of the Boston Red Sox.
Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal, who had four hits for the second straight game, went 10-for-13 in his last three games, which has raised his batting average 48 points to .276.
