Blue Jays go for series sweep against Orioles
May 16, 2007 - 1:21 PM Baltimore (18-22) at Toronto (17-22) 7:07 pm EDTTORONTO (Ticker) -- The Toronto Blue Jays have enjoyed visits from the Baltimore Orioles recently.
With a win against the Orioles on Wednesday, Toronto will complete a three-game sweep of the series and move into third place in the American League East.
Toronto has two trends working in its favor - the Orioles have won just five of their last 17 visits here and are just 6-14 on the road this season.
A.J. Burnett (3-3, 4.56 ERA) gets the start for Toronto and will be looking to repeat the success he had in his last start against Baltimore. On April 20, the righthander held the Orioles to two runs in seven innings, though he did not factor in the decision.
The 30-year-old has been striking out more batters of late. Burnett fanned a season-high 10 in his last outing on Friday against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and has 26 strikeouts in his last three starts. He had 19 strikeouts in his first five starts this season.
Rookie Brian Burres (1-1, 3.68) will take the mound for a Baltimore staff that leads the league with 174 walks. The lefthander is coming off his first career win, allowing two runs in five innings in a 6-3 victory against the Boston Red Sox last Friday.
Brian Roberts has a 14-game hitting streak for the Orioles, who managed just five singles and grounded into three double plays in Tuesday's loss here.
Toronto reliever Jeremy Accardo earned his third save and increased his scoreless inning streak to 18, five shy of the club record for scoreless innings to start a season.
