Braves seek to get four-game split in nation's capital

May 17, 2007 - 1:38 PM Atlanta (25-15) at Washington (14-26) 1:05 pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Braves seek to get a split of a four-game series against the Washington Nationals when the teams meet on Thursday.

After dropping a season-high eight straight games, Washington has bounced back to win five or its last six outings, including Wednesday's 6-4 victory over Atlanta.

It was a most unlikely victory for the Nationals, who were forced to give rookie reliever Levale Speigner his first career start because their starting rotation has been plagued by injuries.

Matt Chico (2-4, 5.59 ERA) hopes to continue Washington's recent success as he goes for his first win in three starts. In his last outing Saturday against Florida, the lefthander allowed just one run in 4 1/3 innings but did not figure in the decision.

Chico split his two starts vs. the Braves this season, including his first major league win on April 16.

Atlanta will counter with Chuck James (4-3, 4.04), who had a no-hitter for 6 1/3 innings last Saturday before giving up just one hit in seven shutout frames in a 9-2 win over Pittsburgh. The lefthander is 2-2 with a 3.95 ERA in five lifetime starts against the Nationals.

The Braves have lost three of their last four games, including two of three here.
