RHP Guthrie seeking to start new streak for Baltimore
May 19, 2007 - 2:46 PM Baltimore (19-23) at Washington (15-27) 7:05 pm EDTWASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Jeremy Guthrie takes the mound hoping to build on an impressive performance when the Baltimore Orioles face the Washington Nationals in the middle game of their three-game interleague series Saturday.
Guthrie (2-1, 3.34 ERA) was denied a win on Sunday despite allowing just one run and three hits in 8 1/3 innings against Boston. The righthander held a 2-0 lead when he left, but the bullpen imploded, allowing the Red Sox to score five runs in the ninth for a 6-2 win.
Guthrie will be looking to help the Orioles start a new winning streak after they snapped a five-game skid with a 5-4 victory on Friday. Prior to that rough stretch, Baltimore had won four in a row.
Brian Roberts had four hits, including an RBI single in the eighth that gave Baltimore a 5-2 lead.
Washington will turn to Mike Bascik (NR), who had his contract purchased from Class AAA Columbus earlier Saturday to fill in for the injured Jason Bergmann. Bergmann was placed the 15-day disabled list with an elbow injury Friday.
Bascik, who last pitched in the majors in 2004, has a career record of 5-5 with a 5.88 ERA in 22 starts with Cleveland, the New York Mets, and Texas. The righthander was 1-3 with an ERA of 4.00 in nine games - five starts - with Columbus.
