Cards' Reyes looks to end winless skid
May 19, 2007 - 2:55 PM St Louis (16-23) at Detroit (25-16) 7:05 pm EDTDETROIT (Ticker) -- The last time St. Louis Cardinals starter Anthony Reyes faced the Detroit Tigers, he was winning Game One of the World Series. He has not won since.
Reyes and the Cardinals face the Tigers when they continue their three-game interleague set at Comerica Park on Saturday.
Reyes (0-6, 5.08 ERA) pitched into the ninth inning of last season's Fall Classic, allowing just two runs in a 7-2 win. The 25-year-old righthander had the fewest wins of any Game One starter in World Series history and was the first in 33 years with a losing regular-season record (5-8). However, he helped St. Louis set the tone for a series, which it won in five games.
A 15th-round pick in the 2003 draft, Reyes has gone winless in seven starts this season. In fact, he has not won in the regular season since September 3, 2006 against Pittsburgh, going 0-8 in 11 starts since.
Reyes allowed three runs in five innings of Sunday's 3-0 loss at San Diego. He has not allowed more than four runs in any of his starts this season, but also has not lasted more than six innings.
The Cardinals have not helped him out much, though, giving the righthander just six total runs of support during his slump and never more than two runs in any single outing. Three of the six times the team has been shut out this season have come when Reyes has been on the mound.
St. Louis has not managed to generate much offense for any of their pitchers this season, as they rank last in the majors with 133 runs. Conversely, after their 14-4 rout in Friday's opener, the Tigers lead the majors with 223 runs.
Nate Robertson (3-3, 3.62) will look to avoid losing his third straight start for Detroit after surrendering three runs and 11 hits in five innings of a 7-1 loss at Boston on Monday. He has allowed 21 hits and nine runs in 9 2/3 innings in his last two outings.
Robertson gave up two runs over five innings in Game Three of last season's World Series in his first-ever appearance against the Cardinals.
Placido Polanco had three hits and was one of three Tigers to drive in three runs as Detroit posted just its second win in its last six games.
