Orioles seeking sweep of Nationals
May 20, 2007 - 1:22 PM Baltimore (20-23) at Washington (15-28) 1:35 pm EDTWASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Baltimore Orioles look to sweep the Washington Nationals when the teams resume their "Battle of the Beltway" interleague series on Sunday.
The Orioles, who lost two of three meetings here a year ago, are after their fourth three-game series sweep of the season.
Erik Bedard (3-2, 4.67 ERA) gets the start for Baltimore and is seeking his first win since April 18. The lefthander is 0-1 over his last five starts despite posting a 3.12 ERA during that span. He has never pitched against Washington, which has the worst team batting average in the National League.
Washington's Micah Bowie (0-2, 3.71) has not started a game since 1999 when he was a member of the Chicago Cubs. However, with Jerome Williams on the disabled list, the 32-year-old lefthander will be after his first victory as a starter since September 23, 1999.
Jay Payton's two-run double in the top of the 11th inning on Saturday lifted to Orioles to a 3-2 victory in the middle game of the series. Payton doubled earlier in the game and accounted for the Orioles' only extra-base hits.
The Nationals are having no luck against teams outside of their division. Washington is 14-14 against National League East rivals, but just 1-14 against teams outside the division.
Dmitri Young started for the second straight game for the Nationals after he was unable to start the previous 10 games due to a sore left Achilles. Since returning to the lineup, he is 4-for-6.
