Angels look to sweep bitter interleague rivals

May 20, 2007 - 1:39 PM LA Dodgers (25-18) at LA Angels (26-18) 3:35 pm EDT

ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- Winning at home has become almost expected for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Beating the Los Angeles Dodgers has almost become routine.

The Angels look for a season-high fifth straight win on Sunday when they try to sweep the Los Angeles Dodgers in Anaheim for the third time in five years at home.

The Angels, who own a 16-6 mark at home, swept the Dodgers here in 2003 and 2005 and they are in position to do so again. They have outscored their interleague rivals, 15-3 in this series' first two games to move to a season-high eight games over .500.

The Angels are on their third four-game winning streak of the year and have won nine of 11 overall.

Kelvim Escobar (4-2, 3.35 ERA) looks to continue the team's home success and his solid work at Angel Field this season. The righthander is 3-1 with a 2.18 ERA in five starts at home, where he allowed seven hits and struck out a season-high nine for his fourth career shutout in his last home outing, an 8-0 victory over Cleveland on May 10.

However, Escobar followed that up with his worst outing of the season when he allowed season highs of eight runs and eight hits over 2 1/3 innings last Tuesday in an 11-3 loss at Seattle. Escobar is 1-1 with a 4.05 ERA in two starts against the Dodgers, including tossing seven scoreless innings in his last outing against them.

The Dodgers will counter with Derek Lowe (4-4, 3.90), who looks to win his fourth straight decision against the Angels. The righthander is 5-4 with a 2.94 ERA in 25 career games - nine starts - against the Angels, including a seven-inning gem in his only start - a win - against the Angels last season at Dodger Stadium.

Lowe has never won in Anaheim, going 0-2 with a 4.58 ERA in three starts here. He managed to pick up a win on Tuesday, despite allowing four runs and eight hits over 5 1/3 innings in a 9-7 victory over St. Louis.

The Dodgers have dropped 13 of their last 16 games in Anaheim.
