Ace Hernandez takes mound for Mariners vs. Padres
May 20, 2007 - 1:41 PM San Diego (23-20) at Seattle (19-19) 4:05 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) -- Felix Hernandez will look to return to form in his second start since returning from the disabled list when he takes the mound for the Seattle Mariners against the San Diego Padres in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday.
Hernandez (2-1, 2.57 ERA) was activated from the 15-day disabled list in time to start last Tuesday. But the hard-throwing righthander was on a short leash and left after 78 pitches, allowing three runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
The 21-year-old righthander has been sidelined since April 18 after straining his right forearm against the Minnesota Twins. Prior to that, Hernandez pitched 17 scoreless innings to begin the season.
Hernandez came within five outs of a no-hitter April 11 at Boston and struck out 12 in eight scoreless frames in Seattle's season-opening win against Oakland.
The Padres will counter with Justin Germano (1-0, 0.69), who has allowed just one run and six hits in 13 innings over two starts this season.
On Saturday, Jose Guillen homered and doubled against Greg Maddux as Seattle snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-4 victory over San Diego.
