Yanks face rival Red Sox, aim for third straight win

BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- The New York Yankees will look for their third straight win when they take on the archrival Boston Red Sox in the middle game of a three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday.

One night after avoiding a sweep at the hands of the New York Mets, the Yankees won consecutive games for the first time in two weeks. They reached .500 on May 9 and were six games out of first place but dropped 4 1/2 games in the standings on their road trip through Seattle, Chicago and New York.

Chien-Ming Wang pitched effectively into the seventh inning and was backed by home runs from Alex Rodriguez and Jason Giambi as the Yankees opened a three-game series against the Red Sox on Monday with a 6-2 victory.

They aim for their third straight triumph behind Mike Mussina (2-2, 5.64 ERA), who is 19-14 with a 3.47 ERA vs. Boston in his career.

Boston will counter with Julian Tavarez (2-4, 5.59), who had his best start of the season his last time out. The righthander allowed one run and four hits in seven frames, while walking four and striking out three in a 2-1 win over Detroit last Tuesday.

The Red Sox, who have one of the American League's best pitching staffs this season, recently placed star righthander Josh Beckett on the disabled list.
