Cardinals try to end four-game skid
May 22, 2007 - 1:25 PM Pittsburgh (19-24) at St Louis (16-25) 8:10 pm EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) - The St. Louis Cardinals hope that some home cooking can end their downward spiral.
The defending World Series champions begin a six-game homestand when they welcome in the Pittsburgh Pirates for a three-game series Tuesday.
Since capturing the title in five games over Detroit, St. Louis has been a complete disappointment this season with its most recent setback coming in the form of a three-game sweep at the hand of the Tigers this past weekend.
The struggling Cardinals, who have the worst home record in the National League at 7-11, have not suffered six straight losses since enduring a seven-game slide from September 20-26.
With the task of tying to end St. Louis' woes will be Adam Wainwright (3-3, 6.34 ERA), who is coming off his shortest outing of the season. He was tagged for eight runs in 2 2/3 innings in a 9-7 loss at the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.
The righthanded Wainwright also hopes his last outings against the Pirates will be forgotten, allowing five runs in six frames on April 17.
Pittsburgh's Zach Duke (1-4, 5.19) seeks his first victory in eight starts. However, Duke was impressive in his last outing, giving up two runs in seven innings in a no-decision to Florida.
The lefthander is 2-1 with a 3.72 ERA in five lifetime starts when facing the Cardinals.
