RHP Peavy takes mound for Padres

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) - Jake Peavy hopes to add more strikeout victims on Tuesday.

Peavy takes the hill for the surging San Diego Padres in the first of a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs.

The hard-throwing righthander gave up two runs in seven innings but did not figure in the decision of a 3-2 victory against the Cincinnati Reds last Wednesday.

Peavy has been brilliant in his past three outings, striking out 25 batters in posting a 2-0 mark with an eye-popping 0.86 ERA. He is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in four career starts vs. Chicago.

San Diego enters following Sunday's 2-1 win at Seattle during interleague play as Josh Bard and Adrian Gonzalez both plated run-scoring base hits.

Rich Hill (4-3, 2.91) will attempt to get back on the winning side of things after two straight losses for the Cubs. The lefthander allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings of an 8-1 loss at the New York Mets.

In his lone career start against the Padres, Hill gave up up three runs and four hits in 5 1/3 frames during a 9-0 thrashing at Wrigley Field on May 14.

The 27-year-old has stumbled this month, going 1-2 with a 5.29 ERA in three starts compared to April's 3-1 record.
