Tulowitzki helps Rockies snap two-game skid
May 23, 2007 - 7:09 AM DENVER (Ticker) -- Rookie Troy Tulowitzki and the Colorado Rockies were glad to see a pitcher other than Livan Hernandez in the ninth inning.Tulowitzki hit a go-ahead RBI double off Brandon Lyon as the Rockies posted a 3-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
Lyon (3-2) came into the game after Hernandez, who had his best outing of the season, frustrated the Rockies for eight innings. The righthander with a rubber arm allowed just one run and nine hits but left after 125 pitches.
"Livan has that ability of just keeping getting people out but you take your turn," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "He is effective so yeah, I think we were ready to try somebody else tonight."
Hernandez said he stayed in as long as he could.
"I tried not to leave a lot of pitches in the zone. You have to be careful with that team," Hernandez said." I knew the bullpen had been worked. I had 125 pitches. I tried to do my job and stayed in."
Hernandez is 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in four starts against the Rockies this season.
With the game tied a 1-1, Garrett Atkins led off the ninth with a walk and pinch runner Jamey Carroll scored on Tulowitzki's double down the right field line. After a sacrifice, Ryan Spilborghs hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
"Late in the game I want to win so badly, I just want to be that clutch guy sometimes and it seems to be working," Tulowitzki said.
"I just took some breaths up there and relaxed. I thought I was going to get a fastball especially after he walked Garret (Atkins). I got a pitch just a bit outside and I was able to go opposite field with it."
Manny Corpas (1-2) pitched a scoreless eighth and Brian Fuentes threw a perfect ninth for his 12th save in 13 chances.
Brad Hawpe had two hits for the Rockies, who snapped a two-game losing streak.
Arizona had its four-game winning streak snapped.
Diamondbacks' rookie Mark Reynolds, who was called up from Class AA Mobile on Wednesday, drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the third that provided a 1-0 lead.
"We jut couldn't plate a couple especially early on when we had some chances," Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin said. "It seemed like the middle innings to the later innings we didn't have as good at-bats as we did earlier."
Colorado tied it in the fifth, when Yorvit Torrealba hit a one-out single to right field and Colorado starter Josh Fogg followed with a single to left. Willy Taveras then plated Torrealba to tie the game at 1-1.
Fogg allowed one run and six hits in six-plus innings but left with a strained right groin in the seventh. He is winless in his last five starts.
"I felt good out there but I allowed base runners every inning. I threw well when I needed to and wiggling out of jams is something I have been able to do," Fogg said.
"I felt good until I hurt the groin. The third step out of the box when I hit I felt it roll over and I knew as soon as I did it I wasn't going back out."
