LHP Marshall makes season debut for Cubs
May 23, 2007 - 3:24 PM Chicago Cubs (20-23) at San Diego (25-20) 10:05 pm EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Cubs hope that Sean Marshall can give them a shot in the arm as they face the San Diego Padres in the second game of a three-game series Wednesday.
Marshall (NR) was called up from Class AAA Iowa for his season debut. The 6-7 lefthander posted a 6-9 record with a 5.59 ERA in 24 starts for Chicago a season ago.
In his lone career start against the Padres, Marshall allowed just one run and three hits with six strikeouts in six innings but did not figure in the decision.
"I feel good, strong, stretched out, ready to go," Marshall said. "I hope I can stay for the rest of the season, stay for 10 years, 15 years and have a nice long career. Let's start it right now."
San Diego counters with veteran David Wells (1-2, 5.40 ERA), who is coming off his best performance of the season. The veteran southpaw surrendered one run and seven hits in eight frames but did not figure in the decision vs. Cincinnati on May 15.
The 44-year-old Wells hopes to turn things around after giving up 17 runs in 21 innings in his previous four starts. He is 1-1 over three career starts against Chicago.
Mike Cameron hit two homers and Adrian Gonzalez drove in two runs as the Padres posted a 5-1 triumph in the opener Monday.
Chicago first baseman Derrek Lee returned to the starting lineup for the first time since May 13. The former All-Star went 0-for-4 with one strikeout.
