Ordonez continues assault on Angels; Guillen homers twice

May 24, 2007 - 9:19 PM DETROIT (Ticker) -- Magglio Ordonez continued his assault on the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Ervin Santana continued his road misery.

Ordonez went 4-for-4 with three RBI and Carlos Guillen homered twice and drove in five runs to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 12-0 victory over the Angels in the rubber game of their series on Thursday.

The major league leader with 45 RBI, Ordonez has 13 hits in 19 at-bats with four homers and 12 RBI against the Angels this season. He hit two of those homers in an 8-7 win here on Wednesday night.

"I'm just swinging the bat well," Ordonez said of his 15th career four-hit game. "They (the Angels) got a lot of good pitchers so I can't explain my success against them."

On Thursday, Ordonez singled home a run in the first inning, doubled and scored in the third, delivered a two-out, two-run double in the fourth and singled in the sixth.

Guillen highlighted a four-run first inning with a three-run homer and added a two-run shot in the sixth off reliever Chris Bootcheck for his fifth career multi-homer game and first since last September 12 against Texas.

Santana (3-6) lost for the fifth time in as many road starts this season after yielding eight runs and seven hits in just 3 2/3 innings.

"They got a great lineup and Ervin left the ball up," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Magglio is really on some kind of a roll."

Activated from the disabled list earlier in the day, Jeremy Bonderman (3-0) made his first start since May 8 and allowed just four hits in eight innings.

"To be out for that long with a blister is frustrating," said Bonderman, who walked five and struck out six. "I was just glad to get back out there and pitch. Getting all those runs was sure great."

Wilfredo Ledezma pitched a perfect ninth to complete the Tigers' first shutout of the season.

Bonderman pulled a Houdini act in the first inning, escaping a bases-loaded, none-out jam after allowing a single to Orlando Cabrera and a pair of walks to Chone Figgins and Vladimir Guerrero. Gary Matthews Jr. then hit a comebacker to Bonderman, who threw to catcher Mike Rabelo to start a home-to-first double play. Casey Kotchman hit a flyout to center to end the inning.

"It's amazing how things turned in that first inning," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "They get nothing after the double play and then we come back with a big inning."

Santana got into immediate trouble, hitting Placido Polanco with a pitch and giving up a single to Gary Sheffield. Ordonez singled home Polanco before Guillen hit a towering drive over the right field wall for his fifth home run of the season.

The Angels threatened in the third inning, but Bonderman struck out Matthews with runners on first and third to end the inning.

Sheffield hit a solo homer off Santana in the third. Ordonez followed with a double and came home on a sacrifice fly by Rabelo, increasing the lead to 6-0.

Bonderman escaped another bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning, retiring Chone Figgins on a flyout to center to end the threat.

"Walked more batters then I would have liked but I was able to make big situation pitches," Bonderman said.

Ordonez knocked out Santana with a two-run double which bounced off the left field wall in the fourth inning.

Curtis Granderson hit a two-run double over the head of left fielder Tommy Murphy in the fifth off Bootcheck and Polanco followed with an RBI triple, increasing the lead to 10-0.

Ordonez singled in the sixth and Guillen followed with his second home run of the game.

"We've put up a lot of runs the last two days and that's what this lineup is capable of," Guillen said.
