Indians seek sweep of Tigers
May 27, 2007 - 1:12 PM Cleveland (30-17) at Detroit (29-19), 8:05 pm EDTDETROIT (Ticker) -- The Cleveland Indians are asserting themselves in the American League Central Division.
The first place Indians can complete a three-game sweep of the division rival Detroit Tigers with a win here on Sunday. Cleveland entered the series one-half game behind the defending American League champions.
Fausto Carmona (5-1, 2.77 ERA) gets the start for the Indians, who have won three in a row. The 23-year-old righthander had won five consecutive starts before taking a no decision in his last start against the Royals on Tuesday. During his five-game win streak from April 24-May 17, Carmona lowered his ERA from 6.97 to 2.55.
The Tigers counter with Mike Maroth (3-1, 4.94) who, prior to his last start, had been a bit of a lucky charm for the team. Detroit won each of the lefthander's first seven starts. That streak came to an end on Tuesday as Maroth allowed six runs in a 6-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
David Dellucci snapped an eighth-inning tie with a two-run blast to lead the Indians to a 6-3 victory over the Detroit on Saturday.
Cleveland last swept a three-game series here on September 5-7, 2005.
