Cardinals aim for second straight series win
May 27, 2007 - 1:57 PM Washington (20-30) at St. Louis (20-26) 2:15 pm EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- If slowing down is all Adam Wainwright was all the righthander needed to do to improve, his starts from now on may move at a snail's pace.
Wainwright and the St. Louis Cardinals will meet the Washington Nationals in the rubber match of a three-game series on Sunday.
After Wainwright (4-3, 6.02 ERA) allowed six hits in the first two innings of his last start on Tuesday's 9-4 win against Pittsburgh, teammate Jim Edmonds mentioned to the righthander that his delivery looked rushed. Wainwright allowed no runs and three hits over the next 3 1/3 innings.
Edmonds has also been helpful in helping the righthander's bottom line as well, as the St. Louis offense has given Wainwright 17 runs of support at home in three May starts. The 25-year-old will be making his first start against the Nationals.
Chico (3-4, 5.54) will try once more to get his first career road win. The rookie lefthander is 0-4 with a 6.31 ERA in five road appearances; a direct contrast to his 3-0 record with a 4.74 ERA in five home starts.
Chico, who will be making his first career appearance against the Cardinals, surrendered four runs and three hits over 5 2/3 innings but did not factor into the decision of a 8-4 victory at Cincinnati.
