Yankees look to Pettitte to end slump

May 29, 2007 - 1:50 PM NY Yankees (21-28) at Toronto (23-27) 7:07 pm EDT

TORONTO (Ticker) - Maybe Andy Pettitte can breathe some life back into the the New York Yankees.

The veteran lefthander will look to end the Yankees' four-game losing streak when he faces the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday.

Despite the majors' highest payroll at $195 million, New York is tied with Tampa Bay - the team with the lowest payroll in baseball - for last place in the American League East. The Yankees already are 13 1/2 games behind first-place Boston.

Pettitte (3-3, 2.66 ERA) has been solid for the Yankees this season, especially recently. In his last four starts, he has pitched seven or more innings and has a 2.23 ERA. However, he has just a 2-2 record in those starts, losing a 3-2 game to the New York Mets on May 18 and a 2-1 decision to the Seattle Mariners on May 13.

In 15 career starts against the Blue Jays, Pettitte is 15-7 with a 4.30 ERA.

Converted reliever Shaun Marcum (2-2, 4.33) will take the mound for the Blue Jays. In three starts this season, the righthander is 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA.

Marcum appears to be building his endurance as he lasted a season-high seven innings in his last outing on Thursday against the Baltimore Orioles.

Lyle Overbay hit his eighth home run of the season as the Blue Jays defeated the Yankees, 7-2, in the opener of this three-game series Monday.

Aaron Hill drove in three runs for the Blue Jays, who have outscored the Yankees, 13-2, in their first two meetings this season. Toronto defeated New York, 6-0, on April 26 at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees have lost 12 of their last 17 games, scoring three runs or fewer 10 times during that span.
