Penny takes the hill in opener vs. Nationals

WASHINGTON (Ticker) - Brad Penny looks to contiune his stellar season as the Los Angeles Dodgers begin a 10-game road trip when they meet the Washington Nationals on Tuesday.

Penny (6-1, 2.26 ERA) was impressive in his last start, throwing seven scoreless innings of a 5-1 triumph against Milwaukee on Wednesday. He enters with the second-best ERA in the major and has not surrendered a homer in 63-plus innings.

The righthanded Penny has managed to register an 11-5 record with a respectable 2.33 ERA in 18 lifetime starts against the Washington-Montreal franchise.

The Dodgers won for te fourth time in five games as Andre Ethier homered in the eighth and Juan Pierre got hit with the bases loaded two frames later, scoring the winning run in Sunday's 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Washington will counter with Jason Simontacchi (2-2, 4.37), who gave up just one run and four hits in 5 1/3 frames for a 12-7 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

The Nationals have won five of their last six games, including a 7-2 victory over the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals. Ronnie Belliard went 4-for-5 with two RBI.
