Brewers host Braves, look to end six-game skid

May 29, 2007 - 3:11 PM Atlanta (29-22) at Milwaukee (28-23) 8:05 pm EDT

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Everything seemed to be going right for the Milwaukee Brewers through their first 34 games, but things have changed.

The Brewers will try to end a six-game losing streak and regain their early-season form when they host the Atlanta Braves in the second of a three-game set on Tuesday.

Milwaukee had the best record in baseball on May 11 at 24-10, but since then have lost 13 of 17.

Ben Sheets (4-3, 3.75 ERA) makes his first appearance for the Brewers since leaving a start against the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 22 due to a blister on his right middle finger. Sheets left that game - a 3-2 win for the Dodgers - with one out in the seventh inning, making it the fifth start in a row that he has lasted six or more innings.

The Braves will counter with John Smoltz (7-2, 2.58), who won the 200th game of his career in his last outing against the New York Mets on May 24.

The 40-year-old righthander has been dominant since leaving a game against the Washington Nationals on May 14 with a dislocated joint in his pinky finger. In two starts since the injury, Smoltz is 2-0 and has not allowed a run in 14 consecutive innings.

The Braves took the series opener here on Monday with a 2-1 win behind young lefthander Chuck James, who worked six impressive innings. Though he's struggled this season with a .219 batting average, Andruw Jones hit his 350th career home run in the victory.
