Orioles look to continue dominance against Royals
May 30, 2007 - 3:05 PM Baltimore (25-27) at Kansas City (19-34) 8:10 pm EDTKANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- The Baltimore Orioles haven't had much success in recent years, unless they're playing the Kansas City Royals.
The Orioles look to make it six wins in as many games against the Royals this season and complete a three-game series sweep when the teams meet here Wednesday.
Baltimore hasn't finished a season above .500 since winning the American League East in 1997, but the team has been able beat up on the lowly Royals.
Since 2001, the Orioles own a 35-12 mark against Kansas City, including a 7-0 during the 2002 season. Baltimore can match that effort with a win in this series finale and win against the Royals on September 24 when the teams meet for a makeup game.
Erik Bedard (3-3, 4.10 ERA) gets the start for the Orioles, who have won four consecutive games. After winning his first three starts this season, the Orioles' ace has gone seven starts without a win. The lefthander picked up his second win of the year in the Orioles' 8-1 victory against the Royals on April 13, allowing one run in six innings and striking out nine.
The Royals, who are an abysmal 9-20 at Kauffman Stadium this season, counter with Gil Meche (3-3, 3.18). The righthander had his worst start of the year on Friday in a 10-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners.
Meche left the game with back pain and allowed seven earned runs and 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings. After pitching to a 1.91 ERA through his first eight starts, Meche has allowed 12 runs over 9 1/3 innings in his last two outings.
Mark Grudzielanek and Tony Pena, Jr. have combined to hit .400 (20-for-50) during the Royals' current homestand.
Baltimore's Miguel Tejada has an eight-game hitting streak during which he is hitting .433 (13-for-30) with three home runs and nine RBI.
Kansas City has lost six straight games and has been outscored, 52-13, during that span. The Orioles have hammered the Royals to the tune of 31-9 this season.
