Glavine, Bonds each chasing milestones as Mets host Giants
May 30, 2007 - 3:57 PM San Francisco (24-26) at NY Mets (33-17) 7:10 pm EDTFLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- Two players on the verge of milestones will take the field on Wednesday as the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants continue their three-game series.
Tom Glavine takes the hill in search of career win No. 296 for the Mets, while Giants slugger Barry Bonds continues his push towards Hank Aaron's all-time home run record, which he is nine homers shy of.
In his last start, Glavine (5-2, 3.39 ERA) lost to former teammate John Smoltz and the Atlanta Braves despite allowing just two runs and five hits in six innings on Thursday.
Glavine, who surrendered home run No. 745 to Bonds on May 8 in San Francisco, will be opposed by a lefthander that nearly doned the same uniform as him.
Barry Zito (4-5 4.70), who considered one of the Mets' top signing priorities in the offseason, takes the mound for the Giants, who have lost four straight.
Zito, who signed a record seven-year, $126 million contract with San Francisco this offseason, allowed just one run and four hits in seven innings to earn a win in a 9-1 victory over Houston last Wednesday.
Bonds collected home run No. 746 in a 6-4 loss to Colorado on Sunday.
The Mets, who are seeking their fifth straight win, won a wild, series-opening 5-4 victory Tuesday. Former Met closer Armando Benitez balking twice to bring in the tying run in the 12th inning and Carlos Delgado won the game directly after with a two-run homer.
Delgado has come alive after a terrible start in which he hit three homers in his first 44 games. The first baseman has slugged four home runs in his last six games.
