Halladay makes return to Blue Jays rotation
May 31, 2007 - 2:30 PM Chi White Sox (24-24) at Toronto (24-28) 7:07 pm EDTTORONTO (Ticker) -- Of all the injuries the Toronto Blue Jays have had to endure this season, Roy Halladay's may have been the most debilitating.
On Thursday, Halladay (4-2, 4.37 ERA) will come off the disabled list and take the mound when Toronto hosts the Chicago White Sox.
The Blue Jays have lost closer B.J. Ryan, leadoff man Reed Johnson, catcher Gregg Zaun and fellow starter Gustavo Chacin for long stretches with injuries, but Halladay has always been the rock of the staff and a team leader.
The 2002 Cy Young award winner, Halladay got off to a quick start this season - winning his first four decisions - before hitting a rough patch. The veteran righthander had two of the worst starts of his career at Texas on May 5 - when he yielded nine runs in 5 1/3 innings - and on May 10 against Boston, when he allowed seven earned runs in five frames.
Clearly, something was wrong with one of the league's most dominant starters. The day after his start against the Red Sox, Halladay was rushed to the hospital in Toronto with acute appendicitis.
He was supposed to be down for at least four weeks, but his start on Thursday will be just 20 days after his surgery.
The White Sox will counter with Mark Buehrle (2-1, 3.86). Since hurling a no-hitter on April 18, the veteran lefthander has earned just one win in six starts.
Buehrle has lasted at least six innings in each of his last six outings, but has pitched to just a 4.66 ERA and has allowed seven homers.
Chicago has lost four straight games - getting outscored 37-17 - to fall into fourth place in the hotly contested American League Central.
